Black and White in Your Camera.
I was asked whether to shoot in B/W using camera feature or remove colour information later using computer. My practice is to shoot always in colour and convert photos to B/W later. I always shoot RAW and my camera is set to shoot B/W. This way you get black and white preview on your screen without loosing colours in your photo. That helps me with thinking in black and white. Of course I spend more time working with my photos but I get more control of the final effect and sometimes colourful photos look better than black and white.
When you use camera’s built in mode you are limited with your creativity by algorithms of your camera’s software. If you shoot in jpeg and decide to use camera’s black and white then all colour is lost and cannot be recovered.
My advice is to shoot in colour and then convert to black and white using Aperture/Lightroom/Picasa or any other software that you like. This approach gives you more options and if you decide that some photo could work better in colour then you still have all the colour information needed.
More information about converting to B/W soon.

Wedding Photojournalism
When I see my clients for the first time I always ask them what their expectations are and if they know what photojournalistic (reportage) style means. They usually know but sometimes they need some answers. This post may be useful for both parties - photographers and couples. I will try to explain in a nutshell what photojournalism is.

Basically photojournalism is about telling story of the special day. Photographer does not direct the couple but shoots as the day goes and tries to capture all most important and interesting moments. Photographer is like a cronicler who captures everything with his camera using his experience and talent.
The story told by an album is often a surprise for the couple as many times they do not remember some moments because they are very excited with everything going on. Photographer’s main target is to capture the atmosphere of the day and show it in his photos. Natural photos show couple’s true feelings during their wedding and let them enjoy the celebration not worry about looking good for the photo.

Content aware image resizing.
All people working with photos might be interested in one of the things shown on Siggraph 2007 in San Diego. It’s “content aware image resizing”. Basically it’s all about resizing images but without ugly distortions. Look at the video and see for yourself. In my opinion it is a great thing.

Choosing your photographer
![]()
As a wedding photographer I can give you some advice on choosing a photographer to cover your special day.
Consider wedding photography as an investment. Photos will last for years and you will know their real value later, much later. It is a good idea to invest your money in the best quality services you can afford even if it’s a little over your planned budget. Wedding photos are very special and they are the last thing you want to save on. So do not employ your relative or friend as they should enjoy your wedding and have a great time instead of working. Besides if something goes wrong with the photos you may lose your friend or spoil the family relations. You may ask your photographer to accept payment in instalments or change the package. Maybe he is flexible and can adapt his services to match your budget. It is always worth asking. It’s better to pay a little more for things you really want than pay less and be unhappy.
